In My Surrender, Your Offering, Kosasie turns to object-making to piece together the scarce and fragmented histories of women-owned krisses - a ceremonial blade weld and wielded exclusively by men. Inspired by stories of her grandmother’s lost blade used during the Japanese occupation, Kosasie reconstructs these unrecorded acts of defiance into a series of speculative sculptures, bringing into reality the oral histories, tales, and mythologies of what makes a weapon a woman’s.
Intending to preserve the fleeting moments and traces of women’s history and agency Kosasie uses alternative and unorthodox methods of knife-making. Kosasie shapes the blades from wax before casting them in bronze, leaving them adorned with her fingerprints, whilst the teak wood handles of 5 Luk / 5 Waves) and (Reverse Grip) are carved by hand to fit her grandmother’s left-handed grip. In My Surrender Your Offering (2 Bilah), Kosasie’s hand-carved handle records the imprint of both her and her grandmother, signifying the outward direction of the blades - away from the body - as an act of women’s agency.
In her video perfromance TUSUKLAH, Kosasie activates the 5 luk/5 wave blade.
